Of course it's a Linux question because free software's flexibility makes it great on the road.
Perks on Perkins road in Baton Rouge has wifi that works well with Debian's default dhcp and pcmcia. Some places, such as LSU, don't work because they use various easy to break "security" features which pain honest people. Regular B will work just fine for you and many other people. Cox's web mail service might be better to use than pop and other plain text password systems. Karthick and others on this list have used ssh and mutt to get their mail and might have even better advice. Cox's smtp server sent my mail for me while I was in Chicago about a month ago. I prefer to use exim, the default Debian MTA, but many ISPs block mail sent this way now. Many hotels have ethernet to each room if not wifi and that has worked very well for me.
