No. And most free WiFi spots I've used requires no
authentication. Your laptop should get an IP address
via DHCP and you should be able to surf the internet.

Sure, but be warned that POP and SMTP send your
authentication info in cleartext. Anyone else at the
same WiFi location could theoretically be sniffing
packets, and therefore see your auth info.
