My little brother got a USB cradle for his phone and did something through Sprint. It was windows only and it would hang up on him and have to be restarted but it worked. He did not try to use it under Fedora that I know of. I don't know how much it cost, but it was less than $80/month (ouch). It was a little faster than dialup.
