The GeForce4 MX 440 card I have isn't integrated, and the older drivers
work just great. Just not the newer ones (which, coincidentally, don't
work with the newer kernels).

Mepis runs fine for me with the plain old 2d "nv" driver; but if I check
that box, it doesn't. And, I must admit, the performance in 2D
applications is far more than adequate - in fact, the only functionality
I am lacking is the 3D acceleration.

Unfortunately, I do a lot of 3D programming; I developed my 3D engine
(now called "The Deluxe Engine") on Linux. So I'm kind of stuck, and
I'm seriously considering installing a downgraded kernel so that I can
use the downgraded drivers again.
