I'm at home now, but I vaguely remember the dot versus dash/underscore
was related to version compatibility of the OSGi spec. IIRC it is
numeric ( "." numeric ( "." numeric ( "." alphanumeric ) ) )  And that
means only the qualifier allows non-numbers which is after the 3rd
