There are other things that affect the latencies too. One is the timer frequency setting. The 100Hz setting has the worst latency BTW.

The funny thing is that if I have tired
$ strace glxgears
then fps have increased to 100.
It seems that this is a problem with scheduler interactivity.

Con Kolivas has tried to address this problem with his kernel patches. Many people me included think that he has succeeded.

Give Cons patches a try:
# emerge ck-sources

I would be a nice feature if I could simply turn it off.

Yes, if it only were that easy to fix kernel problems ;)
