I understand, but many areas are picking up EVDO, and UMTS/HSDPA. Many 
countries are participating in the program. Sure, this iPhone will WORK on 
GPRS/EDGE, but don't expect total enjoyment of downloadable music and video. 
Since this is suppose to be the ultimate ipod w/ phone that consumes network, 
shouldn't we be able to use a 3G network?

Hey, at least it leaves room for competiton.

Have you seen the coverage maps of UMTS/HSDPA across the world? That  
tiny splotch off to one side is full of natives who insist that  
they're the centre of the world...

Choosing GSM gave them access to 70% of the world's population,  
particularly Europe which is heavily GSM. Steve Jobs is thinking of  
more than just the US.
