I have my tanks set up just as you describe and I have had no problems at all. While the gerbils can see one another, they seem to be content in their own tanks as their personal space.

Is there a problem placing gerbils tanks, with breeding pairs, right next to each other on the same shelf?  The long side of the tanks would be next to each other.
