First of all, don't anyone ever try this, with gerbils or any other animals. Either
they will die or if they make it, they can have a terrible impact on your local
wildlife.
Speaking of gerbils, it would of course depend on the colour of the gerbils first. Any
mutations would be spotted by predators very quickly and wouldn't last long. Only wild
coloured animals might stand a chance. Secondly, it depends on where they were
released. Too far north and they probably wouldn't cope with the winter time, unless
by living in basements and other places in the city with some heat. I don't believe
that gerbils hibernate.
But again, don't even try it.
