It depends on your environment. Most likely, a good portion
would die, but we do have anecdotal reports of someone doing
this and the gerbils surviving. At which point you have upset
your local ecosystem.
Just as another data point, besides messing with the local
ecosystem, if you got caught doing such a thing, you would
undoubtedly be subject to a hefty fine and possible imprisonment.
