I've never heard of small animals being sent to shelters before, and I'm not sure that the one near me would have any small animals. This is, unfortunately, a common misconception. I have lived in four different states and have had contact with many many shelters. They ALL had small mammals (i.e. hamsters, rats, gpigs, etc.), although I will say that there were a couple that usually did not have GERBILS. In any case, it's always worth a phone call to see what they have before buying from a breeder or pet store. My two cents. Molly
