I know i am gettin into this one a little late but i
just wanted to share a little persional experance.
When i was in 1st,2nd, and 3rd grade we had many many
animals. We had 2 parakets, 4 dogs, 2 gerbils, 2
rabbits, 1 trantula (sp), 2 gunea pigs, who knows how
many fish, 2 iguanas, and 1 hamster. All of which were
"my" pets. We got them because i wanted them, but in
reality like with all young children i was not the one
paying for them or taking care of them. I would play
with them and help out with little things. As i got
older our animal population got smaller and eventualy
we just had the rabbits (one of which lived to be 9 or
10 and the other is still alive), fish, and the iguana
(we had to get rid of one of them due to fighting). i
was in about 5th and 6th grade then and i can remember
actualy taking care of the animals. I would clean the
cages, spend all my money on them, and play with them
all the time (i took care of all but the dogs that is
they were still mostly taken care of my my parents
because they were big dogs). I think that that is
about hte time that most kids have the responsibilty
to fully care for an animal like gerbils, rabbit, or
other small things (not things tht need walks and are
a lot more work like dogs and even cats). Now i am 16
and going into 11th grade. I own 5 cats, 1 rabbit
(same one), 2 beta fish, 2 rats, 1 dog, and somewhere
upwards of 50 gerbils all of which i am the sole care
provider for. Not a single other person in my house
will spend any money or time on any of my animals
(expecialy the rats mom hates them). So obviously 16
(for some people maybe not all) is old enough. Sorry
for any spelling problems or typos,im in a hurry to go
clean cages.
