I'v covered the inside of my wheels with 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Cut it to size, leaving extra legnth to fit the inside with just one overlapping row. And, leave a row of horizontal wires on each side. Use a pair if pliers or needle nose pliers to clamp the horizontal wires around the outside of the wheele. Do the same thing with the overlapping row. All of these wires are inaccessable to the gerbil. I also hang my wheels from the cage cover to prevent tails from being caught and injured.
