Over many years with Many fmilies of gerbils at any given time, I've yet to
have a problem with wheel caused injuries. I also hang them from the side
of the cages.
About chewing, I find they like plain cardboard and plain wood. We have a
lot of fruit trees/shrubs around here (apple, mulberry, etc.) which provides
a nice supply of fresh untreated wood to give them. An occassional Nut in a
Shell is also good for variety of things to chew and has a yummy reward
inside. Just don't use that too often as nuts are high in fat, but
occassional is ok
