GIMP doesn't have any code to open Photoshop pattern files. It can read
the GIMP .pat format (which is not compatible to the PS one) and it can
read patterns in some common image formats, such as PNG, GIF and JPEG
(actually all formats supported by the gdk-pixbuf library).

GIMP can open some Photoshop brushes (.abr) directly, so perhaps there
is some confusion here due to this.
