Hi,

I want to echo Gerard's posting on Radio Browsing for communities. In the
case of West Africa, there is an increasing number of FM broadcasting radios
that are being operated by the private sector and NGOs throughout the
countries; this is particularly the case for Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal
and where women speakers are very active and also local languages are used.

No doubt that radio-broadcasting is still far the most efficient way to reach
the remote rural communities and a strategic combination with the new
technologies such as the Internet will make a great impact. Fortunately the
recent development of the technology allows it (e.g: the WorldSpace satellite
digital broadcasting). The next step that will help to take more advantage of
this will be the development of relevant content.

You may be interested in a recent Farm Radio workshop on the subject that FAO
(see http://www.fao.org) has organized in Rome, February, 2001.

Gaston.
