Hi!
I am Sam Samarasinghe, a Sri Lankan who spends his professional time mostly
in the US but edits a monthly regional newspaper "The Kandy News" that is
published in Kandy. I have a few comments on the Kothmale project.
1. I know from experience, having maintained The Kandy News for almost
seven years (the newspaper has a small office in Kandy), that it is very
hard to raise advertising income outside Colombo. Sri Lanka is a very
Colombo-centric country. Even in Kandy, let alone Kothmale that is
relatively remote and poor, businesses are reluctant to advertise.
2. Lanka Telecom is part owned by the government but it is now under private
Japanese management.
3. I am very interested in the Kothmale project. I am now in Washington
but will return to Kandy in late May. I will visit the Kothmale project and
do a story for The Kandy News. (I have a special interest in web
communication. I edit The Kandy News on the Internet from Washington, DC.
More importantly I am a professor attached to the Payson Center for
International Development and Technology Transfer of Tulane University, New
Orleans. I am the Director of the Washington, DC branch of Payson. We are
interested in IT for development. We also have a MS and Ph.D. program in
international development that is available via the web.)
Regards.
SS
