Alastair, Your points in this thread are important. However, you seem to think that the U.S. is actually trying, as a nation, to "solve" the problem of AGW. There has been a major backlash against the so-called "environmental movement" in this country and part of that is a rejection of the science behind the problem of Global Warming. Our current government is dead set against doing ANYTHING meaningful to slow the emissions of CO2, as these guys come from the fossil fuel industry. Just in the last 3 weeks, there were 2 hearings in the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee regarding Mann et al. 1998 and 1999. The "Hockey Stick" graph was the focus of these hearings and the Chairman of the Committee was trying to discredit the entire scientific effort which has been directed toward climate re-construction over the past 1000 years. http://energycommerce.house.gov/108/Hearings/07192006hearing1987/hearing.htm http://energycommerce.house.gov/108/Hearings/07272006hearing2001/hearing.htm You may read the written statements and listen to the audio for these hearings. At the beginning of the audio, there are opening statements by the committee members. If you listen to these, you will find how great are the differences between the two political parties on this question. While I might wish that the science were accepted, that does not appear to be the situation today, although the recent heat wave(s) may have changed the public's perception just a bit. But when winter comes around, most people will have forgotten the heat and be more worried about staying warm. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Global Change ("globalchange") newsgroup.
