No, my theory is that US-centricism is leading to complacency in the
US, and a failure to address the immensity of the problem. Oil
presidents aside, serious scientists, such as James Hansen and yourself,
think that by the US and a few other western countries switching to
nuclear power, then the problem can be solved. But, while the US is
building its first nuclear power station, China will have commissioned
100 coal fired stations.
The increase in US oil consumption over the last ten years equals the
total consumed by the UK. Thus any action by the UK to reduce
CO2 emissions is pointless unless the US cooperates. But the same is
true for the US. Unless China, India and Indonesia cooperate then
any US savings in fossil fuel emission as a result of switching to nuclear
energy, will be wiped out by the growth of the emerging nations!
The US may be the only super-power on the planet, but even you
cannot solve this problem alone :-(.
