I'm in strong agreement with Hartmut. I am also a disabled vet with
20+ years of active military
service to this great country. I've lived in countries which were under
'martial law', I've seen a lot
of the same things that Hartmut is talking about. Hey guys, it ain't fun!
How would you like to see
armed people in uniforms scattered all through your home town? And those
armed uniformed guys have the
authority to shoot anyone they see who is violating the curfew or doing
anything that they think is
'suspicious'?
For example, I saw a 6 year old girl shot down in the street because
she was out to early in the
morning, just about 15 minutes before the curfew was lifted for the day.
They found out later that she
had been sent to the store by her mother to get some food for the familys'
breakfast. Like I said,
"I've seen it, and it ain't fun"!!!
Like John said, it was a knee jerk reaction. To instantly shut down
everything and increase all
forms of security was the natural thing to do. How did we know that by
the time we heard about it, it
was all over? Just like Pearl Harbor, had the Japanese had any dream that
their surprise attack would
be so successful, they would have sent a second wave to hit the west coast
and would have done a whole
lot more damage.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of surrendering any of my
freedoms that I gave over 20 years of
my life to protect, but by the same token, I'm not unwilling to be a
little inconvinienced at the
airport terminals by being searched, questioned, x-rayed, etc, IF everyone
else is also with no
exceptions.
The flight crew, the baggage handlers, the mechanics when they come on
duty, the venders that
provide the 'comforts' for my flight, etc.
I say if we want to preserve our freedoms and our security of the
nation, we are going to have to
change our 'spoiled' way of life a little and realize that we are no
longer 'unreachable' by anyone from
anywhere in the world, by whomever decides to take a shot at us. No
matter how they decide to do it.
Terrorism has to be stopped at the source, not at the end where it is
to be carried out. But until
we find a way to do that, we'll just have to live with the knowledge that
it can (and probably will)
happen again, any time and any where they decide to do it.
I'm not a 'dooms-dayer' or a 'finatic', merely a 'realist'.
