Well said, Harmut! You updated Ben Franklin's warning
with a modern context. As a retired Viet Nam era Navy
Commander (Flight Officer), I also agree fully with
John Barsness, Vern, and all those who are not so
eager to grab at quick fixes and scapegoats.

Being free has its cost. In the past, for Americans
with our bookend oceans, that cost was almost
exclusively paid by our armed forces. Modern times now
call upon all citizens to bear the cost. But whether
by our service people in battle, civilian law
enforcement, or by innocent civilians attacked in
their homes, businesses, or at play, the reasons are
the same: because as Hartmut noted, the alternatives
are far worse. Citing one example, there is one thing
that the citizens of North Korea need not fear: a
terrorist attack.

As John noted, there are surely some things we can do
that have value, are realistic, and that won't alter
our fundamental way of life. Alas, these ideas are not
likely to come from pandering politicians and
sensationalist journalism. But, as messy as we
Americans tend to be in our rule-making processes, we
usually do get it right in the end. Part of that
process is for us 'coupers to go out and continue to
responsibly fly our airplanes.

Looks like a good weekend for it!
