Greg is right. I went flying in the Astrocoupe on Saturday morning the day after John when down. I was planning to fly from LWM where I keep my plane to ASH about 20 miles away. This is a flight I have made over 50 times. Once I took off the haze was so bad I just stayed in the pattern doing T&G's. It was so bad that one plane entering the pattern was clearly lost and keep giving position reports to the controller that were wrong. I was worried he was going to appear right at me. This all occured about 80 miles North of where John went down and about 18 hours later. When I hear reports that it was "VFR" weather that Friday night I have to sigh. The weather the next day was also VFR and was so bad that I was unwilling to make a day, vfr trip 20 miles on a route I have made many times. I have also flown back from PVD to LWM (about 40 miles but over water) during the day in the summer when the horizon was so invisible because of the haze that I had to look directly down at the ocean to keep the plane upright. I cannot imagine flying VFR at night, over open water, toward the East in the kind of haze we get here in the summer. (Oh, and not filing a flight plan or using flight following to make it especially bad if I got into trouble). You do not need a conspiracy to get yourself killed out here. You just need to have poor judgment. The real injustice was not that JJ wanted to take foolhardy chances, it was that two people who had no idea of his extreme tolerance for risk were with him. If he had turned on the autopilot he might have made it as well. -----Original Message----- From: Greg Bullough [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, August 04, 2002 7:43 AM To: Desert Eagle; [email protected] Subject: Re: Fw: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Gyros Fun as they are, conspiracy theories are generally a bunch of crap.
