The problem is that we do a good job of telling people about 1000 feet and three miles or one mile or 500 or 1000 feet this way or that from clouds. But we do a lousy job of explaining to pilots that there is such a thing as several times or even ten times the legal minimums in which a VFR pilot shouldn't be flying. You don't need a bloody great fog bank or a giant cumulo-nimbus to kill yourself in. 8 miles in haze and smoke and a good dose of dark and absence of ground references will take care of that just fine. You can be very very legal until you are very very dead. Some CFI's explain that. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that a number of time-building 22-year-old CFIs don't even know it themselves.
