I always thought he may have run out of fuel at a bad time. He flew a long way in the dark & haze and may have had the auto pilot on, and he just about got to the airport. He flew a 182 most of his life, with the fuel switch on both most of the time. My thought was he may have had the fuel switch on the left outer aux at take off. Flew in the dark and haze for about a hour and a half, forgot about switching the fuel, gets just about to the airport, motor quits! This is why the plane went from 5000' to about 3000' real fast on radar, he turns off auto pilot because the motor quit and the auto pilot was going nuts! He then switches the fuel to a full tank, motor starts, he gives full power, plane climbs alittle on radar, he's at about 3000' in the dark and haze, no horizon, and loses control of the plane. When the FAA checks the plane the fuel switch is on and the motor is at full power. Visibility below 3000' was more like 3 miles in haze. It was dark. He descended into the haze and lost all visual reference as he was over the sound.
