Google has systematically added features that seem to "dumb down" the gmail product and interfere with usability. The only thing I can think is that Google may be trying to reduce the number of gmail users by driving them away. Otherwise, it's seems almost as brain-dead and misguided an idea as when Microsoft ruined Excel by devoting 15% of the screen to a ribbon bar so the 10 folks on the planet who don't already know how to use Excel will feel a little more comfortable, initially, until they tire of the lack of control and how hard it is to access features that were once in plain view.
In the the Gmail reply to window, for example, why is it so hard to change the from, subject, to and cc,bcc fields. After randomly clicking around near the top of the window you may get the from or cc area to "open up", but it collapses as soon as you move back to the message. Important email requires care with addresses and subject lines -- gmail has become a toy and is no longer suitable for business use. I think this -- everyone I know who uses gmail agrees with me. What happened to the customer-driven, customer-centric business model that had long been one of Googles success factors? Pity.
