Instead of randomly clicking around near the top of the window, click in the defined box containing the recipients. I like my keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl-Shift-F will put you on the 'From:' drop-down. Similarly, Ctrl-Shift-C and Ctrl-Shift-B will give you Cc and Bcc respectively. Shift-Tab and Tab will switch between the message and header boxes. This has been discussed several times on this list. Personally, I don't need to see the subject and/or my From address continuously. I know what the subject is as I am replying within a conversation. I also know that Gmail will reply with the same address that the email was sent to.
