Aah - that (loss of all previous gmails) would be a tragedy for most of us. The lack of ability to save or archive essential emails to our own HDs is a serious shortcoming in gmail. I know - most people, including me, realize that "The Cloud" is usually safer than one's own HD. But being able to save a few essentials locally would be a big advantage.
