The cloud is not safer at all.  With the new FBI Ransomware virus that 
contaminates your cloud drive, arguably it's even less safe, since users 
would otherwise not make multiple copies of their HD as they would offline.

In recognition of this, Google will, this late winter or spring, allow 
users to download all their Gmails and store them on their HD I've read.  
They are working on the software to do this now, and it should be ready by 
Feb of next year.
