This is actually rather trivial. Download and install Mozilla
Thunderbird<http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/>(note the
clickable link). When you run it for the first time it will offer
you to setup an email account with one of their partners. Click the button
that says 'Skip this and use my existing email'.
On the next step, enter your name (as you would like it displayed on
outgoing email), Gmail address and Password. Click the 'Continue' button
and Thunderbird will auto-configure the rest for IMAP. Click the 'Done'
button and it should connect and start syncing with your Gmail.
To back up your email, you will simply just backup your Thunderbird profile
directory (usually in %appdata%\Thunderbird\Profiles in Windows). See
the profiles
page <https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/profiles> on how to do
this.
See also the 'Synchronization & Storage' section under your Gmail account
settings in Thunderbird for more options.

HTH!
