Indeed do give it a try.
See the profiles page[1] for info on backup up one's profile. This is where
Thunderbird stores the local copy of your email.

The cloud vs. local backup is debatable. In my experience, data stored on a
cloud system is the safest. If data is lost, it is usually due to the
user's local computer being compromised by, for example, having their
password stolen.
Backing up one's Gmail locally is a great idea in this case.
