They do get paid for their work.
 What did they get paid?

Oh, you mean the ability to do
something once and get huge wads of money forever because someone else
is using the idea to solve THEIR problem?

I dont understand what you mean by this. Is this like millions of people sending in
$19.95 a month to somebody running Apache which they got for free to solve THEIR money
problem?

Well, I know Andrew
Trigdell of SAMBA has set it up so you can e-mail pizzas to him (only
buy from local, no matter transport yet, ;-(), there's nothing
preventing you from sending money to any of these folks.

Thats real noble of them, but lets face it, this is America, they are simply
providing free work so somebody else can make money. What percentage of the $29 or
whatever you pay for RedHat is sent to Andy? Do the people at Mandrake even invite
him over for pizza? When RedHat, which is public, and has fiduciary obligation to
its shareholders, hopefully starts making lots of money, will they share the wealth
with all these fine people or will they just start being known as R$? I hate being
such a cynic but I remember a lot of this same talk in 1967 about free stuff and they
all grew up and bought BMWs.

Again, most of them do it because it scratches an itch they have, not with the
goal of making gobs of money forever. I also notice that Linux, Alan
Cox, Andrew Trigdell, Jeremy Allison, maddog, etc, are not exactly
hurting in the money department.

Right, so at what point do we start hating them for it? There is this pervasive
thread here, indicated by the M$ thing that it is wrong to make as much money as you
can from something. I say more power to em. Get whatever the market will bear.
There are a lot of VERY rich people at Microsoft, not just Mr. Gates. If he and the
execs werent sharing the opportunity with the employees that would be one thing,
but from what I understand they all get some piece of the pie. I dont know about
you, but if I could make a widget for a nickel and sell it for $10 to a lot of people,
Id do it.

As a capitalist myself, I have problems with people getting tons of money for nothing.

I dont, just won't give them mine, but that aside, what nothing? They produce a lot
of products, good or bad, they employ a lot of people, and they indirectly create
business for a ton of others. From what I hear, the lights at Microsoft are not out
too often. I think if you mad the statement to the programmers there that they do
nothing they would be a little miffed. Their effort is not as good as Andy because
they make money instead of Pizza?

Read the constitution, there is no guarantee of
money forever (originally, patents & copywrite were only good for 14
years) Limited monopoly, in exchange for putting it in the public
domain. In fact, according to the constitution, the ONLY reason for
patent & copywrite is to "advance the progress in the useful arts &
sciences," NOT to provide a living to anyone. If you want to continue
to excel, continue to work.
