Just to touch on one point on charlie's incredibly cogent e-mail, in
the book version of esr's CatB, he includes an appendix on drivers,
and why open sourcing them works. To quote a small piece about the
Charlie's
> Yes, some device drivers might be better closed
> to protect dwimmer-crafty hardware design, but for the second-string
> component designers building mundane boards, what is there to loose?
"Today, the time your competitors' engineers woold need to spend
copying and understanding the copy is a substantial portion of the
product cycle, time they are _not_ (emphasis in original) spending
innovating or differentiating their own product. .... If you're really
ahead of the game, plagerism is a trap you _want_ (emphasis in
original) your competitors to fall into!
He's got a lot more on it on pages 251-254.
