I don't know for sure, nor where to look, but I vaguely remember that
somewhere you could define "allowable" patterns. Again, I don't know where
you'd do this, nor where to find out, only that I vaguely remember hearing
about it being possible.
I also recommend against it for all the reasons already cited, and for those
listed in the passwd man page :)
