Jim,
I work with three disadvantaged populations; homeless people,
mentally ill people, and people in/just getting out of prison.
My standard spiel to them is:
"When you're looking for a job, you have a stigma against you.
You have two choices:
1) Get a job that nobody else wants, at minimum wage, or
2) Get the skills that will entice people to hire in spite of
the stigma.
If you decide to go into computers, consider the following facts:
-1/3 of the Internet runs on Linux (Internet OS Counter).
-Another third runs some other form of Unix.
-Apples new OS-X will be Unix(BSD).
-Windows has about 1/4 of the Internet; consisting of 9x,
NT, & W2000. The training doesn't transfer between 9x,
and NT(2000).
So, over 2/3 (& growing) of the worlds fastest growing economy
runs on some variation of Unix. The worlds fastest growing
corporate system is also Linux, possibly followed by Apple.
Which system would *You* prepare for?"
Add to that, the fact that most of these disadvantaged people
don't have a lot of pocket capital. Would you ship them a
computer that only runs a windowing environment, or one
that includes (for no extra cost):
-complete windowing environment
-complete office suite
-web, & other server software
-databases,
-compilers,
-and other professional tools, ...
