I guess one issue is just what are these computers to be used for?
Training? Simple, regular desktop stuff? Learning? Part of an educational
program?
While such machines can do many things very well with Linux, I doubt they have
the memory to run desktop apps under KDE or Gnome. So if that was an intended
use, there is an issue. I expect they are machines with small HDs and at most
32M of memory, most likely 16M. Not a naysayer by any means, but I believe
intended use is a point of consideration. Giving people a 486 or P120 with 16
or 32 Meg set up with KDE or GNOME for use as desktop machines is not giving
them a machine which will be reasonably fast and response . IMHO. giving them
such a machine to learn programing and network admin and web design is
something else.
