Dear Prof. Mendes,
Are there any documents (written evidence)(primary sources) indicating that Konkani was called “the servants language” for a major part of the Portuguese rule in Goa and that the Kunbis were denied admission to the primary schools because their labor was required to work in the fields and in the property of the landlords? If so, it would be helpful if you would share that evidence with us.
Thank you.

I think that you know by now that,Konkani was called 'the servants language', for a major part of the colonial period, although there were some missionaries who wrote in this language books for the local population to understand the doctrines of Christianity .
Your work needs to also study the role of the Siddhis of Janjira who still speak the Salcette dialect of the Konkani language today in Karnataka and who have local Christian names like Bostaio,Marie, etc.
and do study the role of the kunbis of Goa.,who were denied admission to the primary schools as their labour was required  to work in the fields and in the property of the bhatcars.(landlords).

Best wishes,

Dear Rochelle,

Your project sounds really interesting. While I don't have the exact information you need via census documents, I'm working on servitude and slavery in the early 19th century in Goa, and India more broadly (for a work of historical fiction). If you would like, I am happy to send you the references that I found useful. My email is [email protected].

All the best with your project. It's important work that you are doing.

Best wishes,

Roanna

Good day

My name is Rochelle Fernandes. I am a PhD student at BITS Pilani, Goa. I am working on servitude in Colonial Goa. Has anyone come across census records of servants during the Portuguese Rule in Goa? I wanted to know if servants were listed and how they were labelled.

All inputs are highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards
Rochelle
