In Canara, esp. in Mangalore too, among the Bamonn Catholics, Konkani was the language of household servants explicitly and they had gone over to English under the newly arrived Jesuits in the late nineteenth century (1878). The Basel Mission from Germany had started mission, printing, industry of tiles etc. in Canara.Catholics had no access. So, they asked for Don Bosco missionaries; Jesuits arrived for English and Latin education. The converted low caste got their workshop and tannery, and a brass band to entertain the rich for their weddings and other festivities. They also got a stage to put up plays. Best musicians grew out of this space. In the church, the lower castes had to stand in in the church behind and by the side of the seated rich until the 1960s.
