My references give me the impression that these words are of Perso-Arabic origin, in early Portuguese, partly in use in west-coast India, and for the items of exchange in the early 16th century. Since I do not have access to much of that early literature at present (I am in a post-surgical situation) I would not be able to consult the sources successfully. W R Da Silva
