Update : I checked the link provided by Barry above, which shows that even Windows users had been seeing the same problem and which gave me hope that it - a Gmail bug - had been fixed, but when I once again attempted to send a photo via Gmail, I received that annoying failure message. Hope the Gmail developers will soon be able to crunch the bug !...
