A poingnant reminder of why Mozilla needs to make l10n non-negotiable in terms of manufacturers using it "as is" - I upgraded my phone today and apparently HTC think that the three languages a user in the UK needs are English, French and Spanish. The 20011 census is just out. We know Irish, Manx, Cornish, Gaelic and Welsh are indigenous and generally get "shafted" to use a technical term. The most widely spoken non-English languages are Polish, Welsh, Punjabi, Sylheti and Urdu. Yet none of these feature as a language offered for the UI. The reality is that the process by which manufacturers choose these is totally arbitrary in the end and doesn't give a dead monkey about linguistic inclusiveness. So the big question is, is Mozilla willing to abandon its principles viz. l10n to suit big business? And wouldn't that be rather ironic, given the mission statement we've translated oh-so-many-times? _______________________________________________ governance mailing list [email protected] https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/governance
