John,
Thanks for reminding us that under all the beautiful eye candy and
award-winning design lays same-old, same-old, consumer-grade
computer hardware. 2 1/2 inch hdds break real easy.
I accept that when it works it's great, but when it doesn't the
distress seems to know no bounds, as a lawyer friend of mine is
testimony to from time to time.
My son's iPod has also been a constant reminder of this fact.

But all computer hardware in common use in all PCs uses much the same
bunch of component suppliers - chips; drives; displays, etc. The
reliability of all from a hardware perspective is likely to be
similar - fairly reliable with occasional statistical duds.
MTBFs for 2.5inch HDDs are readily available for those who want to hunt around.
Software (which drives most of usability and user experience) is a
rather different depending on philosophy, design, and historical
baggage.
