I think the problem is the initial. I know I've had some problems with
making special symbols such as V/ or R/ the initial of the text. In
other places of the text they function properly, but for some reason
the initial special symbol doesn't work.

Have you tried other initial-styles already? You could also try
putting the symbol twice. The first symbol would be disgarded (for
some weird reason) and the second would be shown. I know, it is a very
crude way to resolve the problem...
