A one to one gear ratio is the same no matter how many gears it takes you to
get there. That is my point. The ONLY gear for sure not to change ratios
between the five speed and six speed is TOP gear. So if you are currently
turning 5000 RPM @ 75 MPH (for example only) with a five speed, you will
still be turning 5000 RPM @ 75 MPH with a six speed. To reduce the RPM per
MPH, you need an overdrive transmission where top gear is a higher ratio than
1:1. The Royal Star is such an example where 4th and 5th are both overdrives.
4th is 0.9:1, 5th is 0.75:1. Notice this is a five speed transmission
covering a wider range of ratios. Adding more gears is not done to reduce
operating RPMs, it is done to get the ratios closer together and still be
able to get to a top gear 1:1 ratio.
