Good morning folks. I love the talk on the injector sync & the 6 speed
tranny. This group is way cool. I must agree on getting everything up to
spec & then some. There's nothing better than a perfectly running bike(or as
close as possible). I was checking out some hi-tech car catalogs the other
day & I saw that there are universal systems available (for cars) that can
reprogram EFI systems. If anyone knows or has any experience in this field
then maybe we can get something going in this dept. as well. As for the 6
speed tranny conversion. First let's take into account that Yamaha
designed this unit for a high HP application (racing). These few race bikes
were intended for the privateer racer which can't really afford a new
tranny every second race (so they were built tougher than a street version).
I have been doing some research lately as well on the different gearing
Yamaha has tried with the 6 speed tranny. I have spoken to a few FZR nuts &
the consensus seems to be that the 6 speed is considerably tougher than the
5 speed. They all complained of the 5 speed jumping out of gear & had
nothing but praise for the 6 speed. As far as the gearing is concerned
Yamaha has tried a nice variety. The tranny I got uses a slightly higher top
gear than our stock GTS . Calculating all this is quite confusing (for me at
least) at this point. This is what I have come up with so far. If I were to
run the stock FZR gearing with the 6 speed then I should be revving aprox.
100-200 rpm higher in 6th gear than I would be with my 5 speed . With the
size of the GTS stock sprockets regearing is a synch. I expect to be getting
aprox. 110-120HP (rear wheel) out of the new engine. The sprocket combo's I
may be trying 17T 40T - 17T 43T range. This should produce a lower
(rpm )cruising speed & coupled with the xtra gear ratios of the 6 speed
should still provide all the low end grunt needed for those super slow
follow the leader city cruises & the uphills of the backroads while still
being loaded down with all the gear & passenger. I have ridden many bikes
with 5 speed & 6 speed trannies. I find that I look for that extra gear
regardless, so I don't expect that to change. I never found myself shifting
much\more or less either. Enough for now. I can't wait to try it all out.
Now I have to find the time to book it in. Ride safe. Peter Piazza
