In the summer of 1999, I rode my '93 GTS from Tampa,
Florida to Nova Scotia. I could have trailered it
to N.Y.,where I'm from, and rode it to Nova Scotia,
but I opted to ride. Along the way I passed motor-
homes, equipped with all the amenities, nice and
comfy, towing one or two motorcycles. I thought
about the 4-8 miles per/gal they were getting
equating to $200.00-$400.00/day in fuel costs
and thought, what efficiency the GTS gets at 50/mpg,
with my tent, sleeping bag/mattress and all other
gear. I toured all of Novia Scotia, with all it's
rough curvy roads, meeting up with a BMW GS group,
which rode up from Atlanta, and thought
these were two types of bikes that were up to the
task,perfect for this trip.
I met a friend from Tampa in Boston, where he was
picking up a pristine 95 BMW R1100R, and we rode
back together taking secondary state and county
roads all the way to Tampa. Very little time spent
on the interstates, and we thorughly enjoyed the
2000/miles non-trailered trip. I specifically bought
the GTS for sport/touring and sold my Kawasaki ZX7
which was also used for Florida to N.Y. runs.
To me the GTS was made to sport tour as opposed to
being a narrow-focused sport bike, but to each his
own.
