I think you may be talking about trimming different areas of the bodywork.
When I installed my GIVI rack, I had to trim away some of the side panels
down underneath, closer to the licence plate.  But, the main side frame sof
the rack are quite close to the outside surfaces of the bady panel.  This
may be the area you thought was being asked about.
