My best hotel experiences (and my worst) have been at non chain motels that are still in business (often barely) after the US interstate road system was built. They are on secondary roads in non-tourist vicinities. A 5 unit! motel in Mitchell, OR has to be the best, buying the proprietor's lawnmower gas to continue my journey the next morning. OR and their silly law requiring a body to pump gas just means gas is unavailble in small towns 24/7. However you Iron Butt types would always push on to the Van Santen Ranch in Salem, one of the most hospitable spots in the Northwest. Robert Wilson
