This porous-ness makes it a good candidate for JB Weld depending on the demands that you intend to place on it.

It is a lightweight cast al. part, fairly porous. The cast aluminum grab rails from Yamaha are indeed porous, but they can be welded. I customized the hell out of mine on my Vmax, and had some welding done on it where it wouldn't show. The welds weren't a thing of beauty, but I've seen worse. The welder said there was so much air in the casting that it was hard to weld. -K
