This porous-ness makes it a good candidate for JB Weld depending on the
demands that you intend to place on it.

The cast aluminum grab rails from Yamaha are indeed porous, but they
can be welded.  I customized the hell out of mine on my Vmax, and had
some welding done on it where it wouldn't show.  The welds weren't a
thing of beauty, but I've seen worse.  The welder said there was so much
air in the casting that it was hard to weld.
