Tom, whatever you do don't let anyone dunk them in acid to strip the paint
off.  I had mine dipped because I was getting them powder coated and they
absolutely butchered them.  The acid they used was not safe for some of the
metals used in these alloy parts and they were badly pitted and eroded.
They were soo bad that when I tried to screw one of the allen head bolts
under the tail piece into them the bolt fell straight through the thread
hole.  I had to add thread inserts.

I can't add anything about welding these parts, but the guys have given you
some good ideas.  And I agree with Kevin about using a metal type epoxy if
you are not using them for anything serious.  If the metal has a crack in
it, prep it by using a dremel to v-groove it out and roughen the surface
around the crack to allow the glue to bond well.  I have used this glue
myself and it is very strong, bonds well and is easy to use.
