You can still armor a leg better than a tread. a tread is also much more

If my tank loses a tread, it's still an effective pillbox or strong point, capable of directing fire to the targets it can see. Scrag a mech's leg and you've just lost any combat effectiveness of the mech.

And then when you've left the tarmac of the starport for the softer farmland beyond, your mech becomes a target stand because it has been immobilized. This isn't a sport utility vehicle where you can stop and add or remove bits and pieces and then continue on your way. This is an engine of war that needs to be capable of fighting as issued in the terrain of the AO. Removing parts that you need to travel over most of the planet isn't a feature, it's a bug.
